Zhang Mingxuan
Zhang Mingxuan (1998, China). In 2020, She graduated from Central Saint Martins College of Arts and Design in the UK with a bachelor's degree, and in 2023, she obtained a master's degree from the Royal College of Art in the UK. Currently, She lives and works in London and Hong Kong.
Zhang's artistic practice revolves around the fluidity and de-symbolization of the body, examining the relationship between the body, space, and gaze through distortion and absence. She ingeniously integrates ready-made fabrics from the real world into her paintings, capturing the transition between "virtual" and "real." The use of tangible materials to cover and envelop the "virtual body" in her paintings reflects her contemplation of the physical condition in the real world. In most of her works, the canvas is transformed into a frame or container, subjecting the subjects in the image to external pressures. Through this technique, she reevaluates and repeatedly explores the societal definitions of the body concept and the implications and connotations that bodily images may carry.
Zhang is also intrigued by the differences in understanding the body/space between the East and the West. Through her artworks, she expresses
contradictions and oppositions, encapsulation and fusion, viewing them as a unique interpretation and exploration of life experiences within a multicultural
background.
